What is a page redirect?

Page redirects allow a content author to specify a URL that, when requested, will be redirected on a permanent or temporary basis to a specific webpage or web file. These redirect URLs are managed separately from the page content so that they do not have to fit directly in the web hierarchy. Go to the Portals > Website > Redirects. select New.

When do you need a redirect?

That’s when you need a redirect. A redirect automatically makes a browser go from one URL to another URL. A redirect can point to any other URL: it doesn’t need to point to the same website. Redirects to another domain are sometimes referred to as cross-domain redirects. There are several ways of making a browser redirect.

What is a client-side redirect?

Similar to a 301. A client-side redirect is the result of some code that runs in the browser and then redirects the ‘client’, the browser, to another URL. To be able to run that code, it needs to be sent to the browser first, and therefore this is always a slower solution. Prevent client-side redirects as much as possible.

How do I redirect an expired page?

When you set up a redirect, make sure that the new page’s content is a close match to the old page’s. For example, redirecting an expired specials page to your main specials page instead of your homepage makes a lot more sense. If you redirect an old URL to a URL that isn’t relevant, search engines may not pass on the authority of the old page.
